It gives me great pleasure to make these introductory remarks about a beautiful book in which Claire Joyes has succeeded so wonderfully in telling the story of the celebrated gardens that the painter Claude Monet created in the years 1883-1926, lavishing on the project the whole of his love, care, and pride. Scarcely anything in life meant so much to him as his garden. Monet never, or rarely, spoke to his friends about his painting, but he always mentioned-and with great satisfaction-the latest events in his gardens!
By the beginning of the 20th century, Monet's gardens were already famous, and the few persons privileged enough to see them approached these horticultural marvels with something like religious awe, knowing they were the work of a master intent on delighting the eye. Now, however, these most private of gardens have become public, and the privilege of making them so—of restoring them to their original glory-has been mine.
