This outstanding picture encyclopedia presents the colorful six-decade saga of America's own music—from the jazz in New Orleans legendary honky-tonks to the "new thing" sounds of the sixties. Numerous rare pictures, many previously unpublished, are accompanied by the lively story, crisply told, of the varied settings in which jazz has developed, of all the different types of jazz, and of the many men and women, famous and obscure, who created it. There are photographs and personal accounts of such key figures as

Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Par-ker, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Or-nette Coleman, and many others.

First published in 1955 and revised in 1966, this was the first encyclopedic picture story of jazz.

For this 1981 reprint of the second edition, Orrin Keepnews has written a foreword reaffirming the book's timeless appeal. With its wealth of rare and wonderful illustrations, A Pictorial History of Jazz is an incomparable treasure for jazz-lovers and those just beginning to explore this kind of music.

ORRIN KEEPNEWS and BILL GRAUER, JR.

(1922-1963), collaborated frequently and authoritatively on jazz activities. Their joint projects included editing The Record Changer magazine, founding Riverside Records (a leading jazz label of the 1950s and 1960s), and creating the original (1955) edition of this book.

I've purchased vintage goods from all over the world, and I'm constantly pleasantly surprised by the care taken in the presentation and products that I order from Mask Santa Fe.
