In the late 1970s, architect Frank Gehry bought an old, little pink house in Santa Monica and started to renovate it to provide the additional space he and his family needed. The resulting transformation -with its corrugated metal corset-so startled the neighbors that they organized a protest. Since then, however, the house has been recognized as one of the most important of the century-and as the cornerstone of a new and sensual approach to architecture.
In Freestyle, Tim Street-Porter ushers us into this revolutionary house and from there introduces us to the work of a group of provocative West Coast architects and designers including Eric Moss, Brian Murphy, Peter Shire, and Thom Mayne and Michael Rotondi of Morphosis.
