The tag can lie.
The tape doesn’t.
Every piece we sell was cut in a different decade by a different maker to a different idea of what “Large” meant. So we measure every garment by hand and put the numbers on the listing. Here’s how to read them.
Measure a piece you already own
This is the only method that works reliably across a hundred plus years of American clothing. Take something from your closet that fits the way you want this to fit, lay it flat, and compare it to the numbers on the listing.
Chest
Lay the garment flat and buttoned. Measure straight across from armpit seam to armpit seam. That’s the number we list — one side only, not around the body.
Length
From the base of the collar at the back, straight down to the hem.
Waist & inseam
Waist flat across the top of the pants, doubled. Inseam from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
What each size actually measures
Built from the measured chest of every active garment in the shop. Bars show the real range we find at each label, on a shared scale so you can compare across categories. All numbers are pit-to-pit in inches.
T-shirts
28 garments measured
Tees run the smallest of anything we carry. A Large tee is roughly a Medium in any other category here.
Button-ups
20 garments measured
Camp collars, bowling shirts and 70s cuts sit at the wide end; dress shirts and 50s sport shirts at the narrow end. Check the number, not the label.
Western shirts
17 garments measured
Western is the least predictable category we carry — Large and X-Large overlap almost entirely. Snap shirts were cut for a working fit and stage pieces for a show fit. Always go by measurement here.
Sweaters & sweatshirts
13 garments measured
Knits and fleece are cut with room to layer. At Large and above, expect a sweater to measure a couple of inches wider than a tee on the same label.
Jackets & outerwear
31 garments measured
Remember these are worn over something. A jacket measuring 23" leaves roughly an inch of room over a 22" shirt.
The short version
- A Large tee measures about 21–22".
- A Large western shirt measures about 23" — a full size up from that tee.
- A Large sweater measures about 24".
- Same word on the label. Three inches of difference across the chest — six inches around the body.
What “cropped” means here
When you see CROPPED in one of our titles, it’s a measurement, not a style note. It means the garment measures 26 inches or shorter from shoulder to hem.
Plenty of vintage was simply cut shorter than modern clothing — 50s bowling shirts, 40s sport shirts, waist-length jackets. We flag it in the title so the length isn’t a surprise when the box arrives. The exact number is always in the measurements on the listing.
A note on thermals
Waffle knit and thermal shirts are meant to sit close to the body, so they measure noticeably smaller than everything else — often several inches narrower than a t-shirt on the same label. That’s the intended fit, not a mistake in the listing.
Pants are simpler
We list pants by actual measured waist and inseam, not by the tagged size. If a pair reads 34 × 32, that’s what the tape says — measured flat across the waistband and doubled.
Vintage denim tends to have shrunk over decades of washing, so the tag inside is frequently a size or two off what the garment now measures. The number in our title is the real one.

Sizing in title describes current modern size equivalent based on the measurements below. Actual tagged size may differ from listed size. For best sizing results, use measurements to determine fit.
Vintage sizing varies widely by decade and category: a Large t-shirt measures about 21–22" across the chest, while a Large western shirt runs closer to 23" and a Large sweater closer to 24".
